A summer spectacular awaits you at Caerleon this August. Come and enjoy a fantastic weekend of Roman re-enactment as Empire: A Roman Spectacular takes places in Caerleon Amphitheatre and the National Roman Legion Museum on Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 August, 11am-5pm. Be part of it and experience a day out to remember. (Adults £4.50; children £2.50; family £12.00, under 3’s free)
Caerleon’s Amphitheatre will echo to the sound of marching feet as Britain’s top Roman re-enactment group, the Ermine Street Guard, celebrate their 40th Anniversary and return to Caerleon to amaze crowds with outstanding military displays. Watch as their horses are put through their paces in the arena and marvel at the power of the mighty Roman siege weapons.
Back by popular demand are the Gladiators, Ars Dimicandi, all the way from Italy; a group of 8 handsome Italian men showing off the skills and violence that the Romans loved to watch in the amphitheatre. And if that inspires you, why not try gladiator school? And you don’t have to be a child to join in – grab your sword and try out a few moves!
The rest of the family can browse stalls showing mosaic making, willow weaving, pottery or visit a Roman doctor. There will be tours of the Roman remains, children’s activities, the Junior Legion, face painting or try on some armour that a modern soldier would wear at the Territorial Army stand.
Museum Manager, Dai Price, said:
“We are delighted to be putting this Roman Spectacular on over a whole weekend in August. Come and step back in time to see life 2,000 years ago and have an activity packed day out for all the family; there’s something for everyone, from swordfighting to shopping – or just sit back and be amazed at the action in the Amphitheatre. There’s so much to see and do – it’s a great value day out.”
