Children from Tenby Junior and Broad Haven primary schools were recently invited to a conference in Swansea to meet Keith Towler, the Children’s Commissioner for Wales.
Currently Tenby and Broad Haven are the only two schools in Pembrokeshire who have Ambassadors.
The day was an opportunity for the children to discuss ideas and initiatives with other junior pupils from across Wales regarding the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The role of School Ambassadors is to inform the children of Wales what their rights are, who the Commissioner is, but most importantly to drive forward school improvements with the support of the pupils and School Councils.
Said Mr Towler: “It’s fantastic to see so many schools taking part in our Ambassadors scheme. I extend my warmest welcome to pupils from Broad Haven Primary School – who are among the latest to join us – and also to Tenby Junior, who have been part of the Ambassadors scheme since 2004 when they were one of only six schools in Wales.
“I really could not do my job without the Ambassadors. Not only do they raise the profile of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and my role as Children’s Commissioner but they also drive forward improvements in their school based on what the children themselves think is important.”
It is hoped that the Ambassadors scheme will continue to grow throughout Pembrokeshire in the foreseeable future.
