Do you have any old photographs of local sports matches or competitions hiding away in a drawer somewhere at home? Or old posters or programmes relating to such events?
If so, Gwynedd Archives Services would like to hear from you.
A selection of sporting photographs and other material is already to be seen on Gwynedd Council’s website, go to www.gwynedd.gov.uk/archives
The Archive Service would like to add to this on-line exhibition with material given by the public and also displaying this material in the Record Offices.
There is a wide range of pictures of all kinds of sporting events in the county, which include pictures of:
• members of Caernarfon rowing club on the river Seiont among sailing ships sometime during the 19th century;
• the official opening of the Caernarfon swimming pool in 1905;
• a poster for the Nantlle Vale annual road cycle races in 1937; and
• various football, hockey and cricket teams throughout the years.
Councillor John Wynn Jones, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for the arts, said:
“As well as celebrating the Olympic Torch’s successful visit to Gwynedd, the online exhibition celebrates the long tradition of competitions and sports in the county.
“This is only a small selection of what we have, and as well as preparing for another online exhibition we are also planning to exhibit sports materials in our public record offices during the Olympic Games.
“Our hope is that this selection will inspire people to search for old sporting photos and memorabilia which might be lying forgotten in their homes – and if they do come across anything interesting, I would appeal to them to bring it forward so that other people may have the opportunity to see them.”
Is anyone has any such material they are asked to contact Lynn Francis (01286) 679095 or e-mail [email protected]
