Commenting on the report from Estyn recommending education services in Anglesey be put into special measures, Angela Burns AM, Shadow Minister for Education, said:
“This is a damning report on educational failings in Anglesey, which are betraying a generation of young people.
“This report raises questions about the quality of leadership provided not only by the local authority but by the Welsh Government, which has been running Anglesey’s education department since March 2011.
“If direct Welsh Government intervention for over a year has been unable to help this authority raise its game, then what hope for Wales with the Minister’s endless tinkering around the edges?
“Every child deserves the very best start in life. Welsh Ministers now have a very clear challenge to tackle the endemic underperformance which is blighting the education of so many young people in Wales.”
