Davies: Public transport growth must be sustainable

Commenting on figures showing a 4.3% rise in passenger numbers at Welsh train stations, Byron Davies AM, Shadow Minister for Transport, said:

“These are welcome figures, suggesting that more people are making the positive choice to travel by train.

“We need to ensure the rail network has the capacity for future growth in passenger numbers and as such, I welcome the UK Government’s commitment to electrifying the Great Western Main Line to Swansea and the Valleys Lines – the biggest rail infrastructure investment since Victorian times.

“Travelling by train is also a major draw for tourists as rail remains one of the best ways to appreciate the beautiful natural scenery of Wales.

“I hope the Welsh Government will start working constructively to play its part in upgrading the capacity of the Welsh transport network to allow further growth in rail travel.”
