As part of European Waste Reduction Week, Hawthorn High School sixth form common room is being donated new carpet tiles by Rhondda-based Cleanstream Carpets CIC.
The sixth form common room, recently painted by the students themselves, will get a much-needed final make-over with new carpet tiles being laid next week by local flooring contractor Puma flooring.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services Cllr Anthony Christopher said: “This is a perfect example of how best community organizations themselves can recycle goods and help reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill.
“This is a hugely important issue and as a local authority we take the matter very seriously indeed as seen by the level investment made in this key frontline service.
“Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has made major strides in combating landfill waste and its innovative recycling schemes continue to encourage even more residents in the county borough to think differently about the ways in which they discard their household waste.”
Cleanstream Carpets is a community interest company based at toogoodtowaste in Ferndale. The company takes unwanted and discarded carpet tiles from large companies, sorts and categorizes them and then re-sells them for community benefit.
The aim of the first ever official European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) was to highlight the impact of public consumption on the environment and on climate change. There are a number of events going on in Wales as part of the week, coordinated by Waste Awareness Wales and funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
“By using these re-purposed tiles, it’s great that we’re not only getting a much needed new floor in our common room but we’re also saving almost one tonne of waste from going to landfill,” said deputy head girl Zoe Riley.
“In fact we got so into the idea of waste reduction, we held a book, CD and Video swap day as part of our Children In Need activities.”
