A record number of people will take part in the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday, October 6, with the race leaving Castle Street at 9am.
The race is now in its 11th year and has become a top autumn fixture in the running calendar and a highlight in the city’s annual events.
Each year runners from across the world help to raise money for charity. This year, for the first time ever there is a whole weekend of running planned with a Family Fun Run on Saturday October 5. The 2.5km races will take place in the city centre from 2pm. Saturday will also see the inaugural Welsh Mile Road Race Championship take place in Cardiff.
Age group races take place throughout the day, before the senior and masters male and female category races take place at 3.30pm. Hopes are high for the first sub four-minute mile in Wales for 20 years,
Cabinet Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Ramesh Patel, said: “Good luck to the thousands of people who are running this weekend’s Cardiff Half Marathon, Family Fun Run and Welsh Mile Road Race. It’s fantastic that so many people are helping to raise money for their chosen charity.
“The Cardiff Half Marathon continues to grow in popularity, with 19,000 people signed up for this years race alone. The race has certainly expanded over the year’s, with just under 1,500 runners in 2003 to 18,000 in 2012.
“I am delighted as a Council we are able to provide support to the organisers. The race takes in a number of landmark sites across the city and I would encourage people to show their support for the runners by cheering them on this Sunday.”
A number of road closures will be in place this weekend to accommodate all three races.
The road closures include –
From 6am Thursday, October 3 to 6pm Monday, October 7 – King Edward VII Avenue, from its abutment with Boulevard de Nantes to its junction with City Hall Road.
6am Friday, October 4 to 6pm Sunday, October 6, King Edward VII Avenue (north of its junction with City Hall Road) , City Hall Road, Museum Avenue, College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road.
There will be a rolling road closure between 8am until 2pm, however closures times are just for a guideline and are subject to change depending on when the road is safe to reopen.
