Anglesey County Council is consulting residents on a major new flood alleviation project, which it’s hoped will begin in the New Year.
Several parts of Llanfairpwll have been plagued by flooding in recent years. To tackle the problem, the Highways and Transportation Service has applied for a Flood Alleviation Grant from the Welsh Assembly Government.
If the bid is successful, the scheme will involve major drainage infrastructure works along Ffordd Penmynydd, Ty’n Caeau, Ffordd Rhiannon and across the A5 Holyhead Road adjacent to Pringles in Llanfairpwll.
It is anticipated that the works could begin as soon as January 2010 and take up to eight months to complete
Head of Highways, Dewi Williams, explained, “Inevitably a scheme of this size and nature would result in major disruptions and delays along these routes. Various road closures would be required in order to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the public and workers as the project progresses.”
“Whilst traffic delays will cause some inconvenience, it is essential for this scheme to proceed in order to help safeguard a large number of properties from flooding.”
He added, “With global warming and changing weather patterns, including more severe storms, the frequency of flooding is likely to increase unless a scheme of this nature is undertaken.”
Local residents and businesses are therefore being encouraged to come forward with views which will help ensure the smooth running of the project.
A public exhibition on the scheme will be held at Capel Rhos y Gad’s School Room, Penmynydd Road, Llanfairpwll, on Monday, 11th January, 2010 between 9.00am and 7.00 pm.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting and offer their views. In the meantime, if you have any urgent queries or concerns, please contact Mr. E. R. Thomas on (01248) 752300.
