George: I Will Support the Government to Help Save Newtown Electrical Jobs

Russell_GeorgeMontgomeryshire Assembly Member, Russell George, made the comments after he raised the plight of Newtown electrical firm, Thomas and Betts, with the Minister for Economic Development in the National Assembly.

Mr George took the opportunity to question the Minister for Economic Development, Transport and Science, Edwina Hart AM, following the announcement made last week by Cable Management Products Ltd – the parent company of Thomas and Betts – that it is looking to potentially close its Newtown operation, with the loss of more than 40 jobs.

The Montgomeryshire AM said that he was pleased that the Welsh Government had made early contact with the company and asked Mrs Hart if she was prepared to share what discussions have taken place regarding the company’s situation and whether there were any initial solutions emerging that would secure the company’s future.

In response, Mrs Hart said she would provide the AM with a full update by the end of the week.

Commenting, Mr George said:

“I do welcome the Minister’s response and the proactive action that she and her officials have taken to get to the bottom of the company’s problems.

“It is important that we can fully understand why they have been forced to consider potential closure and if there are any quick solutions that will prevent job losses, something which the community can ill afford to bear.

“I have already written to the company offering my support and have requested a meeting along with local MP, Glyn Davies, to see what we can practically do to prevent this closure.

“I hope the Minister will do everything she can to find a solution which will ensure the company has a viable and long-term future in the town and I will do everything I can to help the Government achieve that aim.”
