A woman in her 50s was rescued by the North Wales Police helicopter crew yesterday (1 January 2009) after she slipped whilst walking in snow and ice conditions in Llanferres, Denbighshire.
Sergeant Scott Gallagher from the North Wales Police Air Operations Unit explained that woman had landed on her back and was in considerable pain. “There was concern about the extent of her injuries and the concern was compounded by poor weather conditions in the area which meant that the ambulance crew were unable to make it to the scene.
“Both Caernarfon and Welshpool Air Ambulances were also unable to attend due to poor weather so at 15.51 hrs we were asked to attend in the North Wales Police Helicopter to convey the casualty to hospital.
“We were able to land close to the scene and drop off one of the crew members before the pilot respositioned nearer to Loggerheads to collect a paramedic who had made it to that area but was unable to get any closer.
“The aircraft then returned to the scene with the paramedic who tended to the casualty who was lying near to the road.
“Conditions were treacherous as snow and ice covered the lane and at one point a passing 4×4 vehicle, although travelling slowly, had difficulty stopping and local people were able to prevent the vehicle colliding with the emergency services in attendance.
“The woman was then successfully transported to hospital. This incident highlights just how important it is to be properly prepared for all weather conditions when going out to enjoy the scenery.”
