A new Housing Bill that will tackle unscrupulous landlords and family homelessness has been hailed by Wrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths.
The ambitious programme is the Welsh Government’s first Housing Bill since it gained full law making powers in 2011 and aims to make Wales a better place to live and ensure everyone is able to access a decent home.
The Bill sets out a series of legislative proposals that will make a difference to people and communities across Wales.
There are plans to enable local authorities to charge a higher rate of council tax on empty homes and measures will be introduced to improve standards in the rented private sector homes through a national mandatory registration and licensing system for both letting agents and private landlords.
Building new, affordable homes to meet growing demand is a clear priority and there is a stronger duty on local authorities and the private sector to do more to prevent homelessness.
Lesley Griffiths AM commented:
“The new Housing Bill will make a positive difference to thousands of people across Wales who are experiencing housing difficulties.”
“This substantive piece of legislation clearly demonstrates the Welsh Government’s commitment to improve standards, reduce homelessness and turn empty properties into homes.”
“Everyone deserves a decent affordable home and I am proud the Welsh Government is doing everything possible to achieve that goal.”
