Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones has congratulated six Welsh Local Authorities on their success in being granted RSPCA Community Footprint awards.
The Minister said:
“I would like to congratulate the local authorities of Pembrokeshire, Wrexham, Anglesey, Caerphilly, Cardiff and Merthyr Tydfil on their success within the Community Footprint Awards and for the hard work and effort they have put in to improving animal welfare.
I am delighted that the Welsh Assembly Government funded Companion Animal Welfare Enhancement Scheme is beginning to bear fruit. There is some excellent work being undertaken as a result of the scheme, such as Pembrokeshire’s work on puppy breeding which resulted in the local authority winning the Wales Local Authority Innovator Award. This scheme is generating really worthwhile work that will benefit the whole of Wales.”
RSPCA commented that:
“Pembrokeshire has used funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Companion Animal Welfare Scheme in starting to tackle poor dog breeding practices in what has long been considered the “puppy farming centre of Wales”
The Minister also added:
“The raising of animal welfare standards is fundamental to ensuring that Wales is regarded as a country that cares for its animals. We will look to take forward Pembrokeshire’s work on the licensing of dog breeding kennels and I am sure that all local authorities in Wales will play their part in doing this. I look forward to more local authorities being recognised for their efforts in due course”.
