Denbighshire County update on wintry situation

Denbighshire County Council is continuing to monitor conditions around the county as the wintry weather continues.

The council has up to 1,000 tonnes of grit left in depots, and a delivery of 56 tonnes of salt has arrived this morning. The council has also hired eight wagons to bring additional salt to Denbighshire from the Salt Union in Winsford, Cheshire.

The council says that residents should not turn up at depots around the county expecting grit, as it will be refused.  The council has a programme of gritting in place and the grit is only being used for priority routes, not for private use.

Nationally, roadsalt suppliers are struggling to meet the demand for further deliveries.  For that reason, the supply chain is now being managed centrally by the Welsh Assembly Government.   Denbighshire is expecting more stocks to arrive, although it is not known when at this stage.

Refuse collectors are working as normal today and recycling parks across the authority are open.

52 out of the 63 schools in Denbighshire are closed today. The latest updates will be placed on the council’s website: www.denbighshire.gov.uk

Social Services say that its three residential homes are operating as normal. Day services for older people at Dolwen (Denbigh), Awelon (Ruthin), Llys Nant Activity Centre (Prestatyn) and Hafan Deg Day Centre (Rhyl) will not be running until and including Monday, 11 January.  This is as a result of consideration of the health and safety of service users.  Work Opportunities schemes for people with learning disabilities at  Meifod (Denbigh), Aberwheeler (Bodfari), Canol y Dre (Ruthin) and Henllan will also be closed until and including Monday, 11 January.
All essential home care calls have been made, with some staff having to reach locations by foot due to access issues. Most planned home care visits were made last night. Meals were also delivered as planned last night by staff and colleagues from the voluntary sector.

Some public transport services in Denbighshire continue to be affected.
