A complete gas main renewal scheme is about to begin in Penrhiwceiber which may cause disruption to residents over the coming months.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will be working with the contractors as they carry out the scheme which starts in February 2010 and is likely to continue until May 2010.
Somewhere in the region of 1km of gas mains need to be renewed in Penrhiwceiber alone and shortly the contractor will be contacting all residents to advise them of how the work may affect them.
The letter will include details of how to contact supervisory staff regarding any issues, which arise during the works. Residents may also contact the Council’s Street Works team, who will be supervising the operation and ensuring any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum, on 01443 494798.
The works will involve many excavations and trenches where the existing main will have to be exposed.
Inevitably there will have to be traffic control and temporary traffic signals along the B4275 route (Penrhiwceiber Road), which may impact on bus journey times, particularly at peak times.
The Council’s Highways officers will be working closely with the contractor to minimise the impact of these works on traffic and residents in the area throughout the duration of the works.
The areas affected areas are the B4275 Penrhiwceiber Road, Railway Terrace and Park Street, works are programmed to commence in early February 2010. The contractor will also have a site compound in the area but this will be located off the highway.
The scheme on Penrhiwceiber Road will stretch from the junction of Winifred Street to Jones Street.
The gas services to individual properties will also have to be renewed at the same time as the gas main and this will involve many footway and carriageway excavations.
All reinstatements associated with these works will be monitored at various stages for a period of two years following completion of the works. Any reinstatement failures detected during this time will be rectified by the contractor at their expense.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Customer Care Cllr Andrew Morgan explained: “The gas main renewal work at Penrhiwceiber will have an impact on many residents of the village, but Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will do all in its power to work closely with the contractors in an effort to minimise any disruption caused.
“We ask residents and visitors to remain patient as the scheme is carried out and have been assured that the contractor will keep all those affected well informed of the progress being made.”
