A new exhibition is now on display at Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor – the ‘Collecting for the future’ exhibition can be seen until 21 July 2012.
The exhibition brings together sports items that have been kept in Welsh museums from the last 60 years. Ranging from a uniform worn by a Welsh team member at the 1958 Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, through to souvenirs of the Ryder Cup in Newport 2010 and recent football and rugby items.
Compiling the exhibition has shown that many sports are either under-represented in Welsh Museum collections or missing completely, although some museums are now beginning to collect from high profile events.
Visitors to the exhibition will be asked to respond by telling museums what items should be collecting to represent their recent history – not just sport. The aim is to ensure that future museum displays are relevant and representative.
The exhibition is at Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor until 21 July and then will tour other museum venues in Wales during 2012 and 2013.
The Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery is open to the public: Tuesday – Friday 12:30 – 4:30, Saturday 10:30 – 4:30. Admission is Free. For more information about the exhibition, contact Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor 01248 353368, [email protected] or visit www.gwynedd.gov.uk/museums
