A chest full of money boosts sports in Gwynedd

A number of sport clubs and organisations in Gwynedd are celebrating after receiving great news that they have secured financial support from a fund which promotes physical activities throughout the county.

Thanks to the Gwynedd Community Chest, 12 clubs and organisations will be receiving financial support worth a total of nearly £12,000 between them to develop activities, promote the importance of being active and keeping fit and improve current resources. From golf to bowling, football and cycling the Chest support all kinds of sport across the county.

Elwyn Jones, Gwynedd Council’s Sport Development Manager said:

“Sports clubs and organisations play a vital role in our communities all across Gwynedd. As well as developing all kinds of skills, the clubs give the people of Gwynedd the opportunity to be active and make new friends.

“During these challenging economic times, the boost from the community chest will allow 12 sports institutions to develop and improve equipment and the activities they offer.”

A total of 12 clubs have been successful on this occasion:

Llewod Llanrug Football Club – The funding will contribute to coach education by sending coaches to leaders, first aid and welfare courses and for one to attend a C license course.

Caernarfon Town Girls Football Club – The club intends to use the money for purchasing equipment and kit to establish a new under 14 team. Funding will also go towards sending volunteers on coaching courses.

Y Groeslon Football Club – Funding will contribute towards purchasing training equipment and facility hire in order for the club to start structured coaching sessions.

Energy Cycles Club – The club based in the Arfon area has received money from the fund to purchase ten Turbo Trainers which will enable more people to train indoors and stage simulated indoor races etc. Equipment will be vital to ensure that club training can continue during bad weather/winter months.

Y Ffôr Bowling Club – They intend to use the money to purchase ‘Roller’ and spindles for mats to ease the process of setting up and keeping the mats and also to make sure the equipment is kept safely without being damaged.

Egryn Hall, Llanegryn – The hall will use the money to purchase three new table tennis tables to enable more participants to take part in activities.

Brithdir Village Hall – Funding will be used to contribute towards sending a local leader on an exercise to music course to improve the provision available to members of the local village hall. Funding will also go towards purchasing exercise equipment for members of the local community to use during exercise and activity classes at the hall.

Meirionnydd Local Sports Council – Money from the fund will help the Local Sports Council to run coach education courses and first aid courses for members of local sports clubs.

Age Concern Gwynedd and Môn – They have made an application to open an activity centre for over 50’s in the Nefyn area. Similar projects have been a great success on Anglesey. Funding will contribute towards purchasing equipment including indoor bowls as well as to hire instructors to run exercise classes and tai chi classes for the local community.

Bangor Bilidowcars Diving Club –The club is a newly established diving club based at Bangor Pool. They will use the money to send two coaches on a UKCC diving course to enhance the quality of coaching provided to its members.

Pwllheli Golf Club (Juniors) – The club has received money to purchase all weather training mats which will enable more children to practice at the club and will also ensure practice/training will be possible in bad weather conditions during the winter etc.

Pwllheli Juniors Football Club – The funding will contribute towards coach education by sending two members on leaders, welfare and first aid courses.

The next Gwynedd Community Chest Panel Meetings will be held on 6 February 2012, the closing date for receiving completed applications is 16 January 2012.
