A group of staff and ex-students from Gower College Swansea is climbing Kilimanjaro this Christmas to raise funds for the Kenya Project.
They will set off on 16 December and plan to celebrate Christmas Day atop the mountain.
Dropping into the college to wish them well this week was The Lord Mayor of Swansea, Cllr Richard Lewis.
The Lord Mayor met with Ian Peabody, Ceri Low, Pat Reid, Helen McClure, Lisa Pettinger and Tej Bahadur, who are leading the group.
The student-run Kenya Project initiative raises money to maintain a feeding programme for over 120 of the poorest pupils at Madungu, as well as paying the salaries of two teachers and supplying them with a variety of educational materials.
As well as participating in college trips, lecturer Ian Peabody runs a not for profit organisation called Education Through Adventure, which aims to make expeditions affordable to young people.
“Not only are we raising money and awareness for the Kenya Project but we are also giving young people an incredible experience,” he says. “To spend Christmas Day at Kilimanjaro is something they will never forget.”
