A Denbighshire school is flying the flag of success after being awarded the Green Flag status as part of the Eco-schools initiative

Staff and pupils at Ysgol Clocaenog near Ruthin have worked hard over recent years towards achieving the status.

Activities have included:

  •     A gardening club where vegetables are grown and then served up as part of the school menu
  •     The school has attracted birds to the location by placing bird boxes on the trees and feeding birds over the winter months.
  •     The School has worked in partnership with the Omindo School in kenya, with staff from Clocaenog visiting the school and Kenyan colleagues travelling to Denbighshire.
  •     Old clothes have been collected to be re-used as part of the Bag2School project.
  •     The school has a busy fruit and vegetables co-operative that sells healthy and local foods to the school community on a weekly basis.
  •     Every effort is made to recycle goods and blue bins have been delivered to the school to recycle plastic, glass and paper.

Einir Jones, Headteacher, said: “We are delighted to be receiving the Green Flag for all our hard work. Each and every pupil at the school has got involved in these initiatives and there is very much an environment-friendly culture at our school. we will fly the flag with pride that our efforts have now been recognised and we will also continue with our work to protect the environment and live up to our name as an eco-friendly school.”
