A magical underworld of fairies has been created to delight you by two thousand people, two hundred stories and one very large pink tent! The fantasy world will be showcased through a performace called ‘NEW.i.D’, a community one-off performance set to take place in the Pink Pavilion on The Works site, Ebbw Vale on the 29th of July, 2010 (National Eisteddfod site).
‘NEW.i.D’ is a community play with a difference. The story, inspired by ‘Flash’ – a six month research project, has collected stories from the Heads of the Valleys area (Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Torfaen and Merthyr). One thousand and four hundred people and seventy groups from the area have contributed through poetry, art, performances, music, photography and dance. These pieces have been the inspiration to the ‘NEW.i.D’ creative team to produce a completely different kind of community play.
Co-Artistic Director, Einir Sion, said, “Words from the poetry have formed the lyrics for the songs and recurring themes and ideas have created the delightful story. The groups who performed with ‘Flash’ are also appearing in the ‘NEW.i.D’ production. This play truly is by the community, for the community. And, you can still be a part of it! There is an open invitation to any individuals and groups from the Heads of the Valleys areas to join in the fun, musical spectacle.”
Co-Artistic Director, Lleucu Meinir, added, “We still have vacancies in the play for those who’d like to take part in the chorus as singers or dancers – but time is short! If you’re interested, contact us before the 8th July.”
‘NEW.i.D’ is a bilingual community play and will be a one-off performance at the Pink Pavilion on The Works site, Ebbw Vale on the 29th of July, 2010 at 7.30pm. The name can be pronounced ‘newid’ which means ‘change’ in Welsh, or pronounced as New ID. The show is organised by Head for Arts and has the support of the BBC and the National Eisteddfod. 2,000 people of all ages and abilities from the Heads of the Valleys area will be contributing to the play.
