A new chapter for Chepstow Library

Chepstow is looking forward to the reopening of its newly revamped library at its Welsh Street site on Saturday 21 January 2012 (9am – 1pm) following four months of refurbishment.  Staff eagerly anticipate the opportunity to show the updated facilities to customers old and new.

The re-opening will see balloon modelling during the morning and local story teller Daniel Morden will be recounting tales for 7-11 year olds from 11am.  A representative from the Chepstow Society will be available to talk about local history and the Chepstow Collection while members of the Gwent Family History Society will be on hand to help with any ancestor-related queries.

The refurbished library has been designed to deliver a much improved library service with increased opening hours.  In addition to an extensive range of books, DVDs and talking books, the library will offer improved Internet access, free wi-fi and laptops for use within the library.  The library will be open for an additional four hours on Wednesdays from 9am to 1pm.

Other features include an updated children’s area, an area especially designed for teenagers and a quieter area for family and local history research.

The proposed library reading garden will be available for viewing on Saturday though work will continue throughout the winter months ready for a launch on World Book Night – 23 April 2012.  Keen gardeners interested in joining the new Library Gardening Group or those requiring more information about the World Book Night book giveaway should contact library staff for more information.

Weekly activities at the library will include First Click basic IT sessions, story times for the under fives, baby rhyme times and family history research sessions.

Monmouthshire County Council’s cabinet member for culture, Giles Howard said: “At a time when the closure of libraries is in the news it is heartening to buck the trend and further improve on well regarded facilities.  I’m looking forward to my next visit to Chepstow library and I’m sure that the people of the town can’t wait either.”

The refurbishment of Chepstow Library has been jointly funded by Monmouthshire County Council and CyMAL (Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales; a division of the Welsh Government) which is committed to creating a 21st century library network as part of the Libraries for Life programme.
