A Service commemorating the life of Edgar Evans

There is an open invitation to attend a Service to commemorate the life of Petty Officer Edgar Evans RN on Friday 17th February 2012 at Midday In St. Mary’s Church, Central Swansea In the presence of The Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, The High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, The Lord Mayor of the City and County of Swansea, Mr John Evans, Grandson of Edgar Evans Petty Officer (First Class).

Edgar Evans RN, a native of the Gower, served on both Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s ‘Discovery’ Antarctic Expedition (1901 – 1904) and his ‘Terra Nova’ Antarctic Expedition (1910 – 1913). ‘Taff’ Evans reached the South Pole with Scott’s polar party on 17th January 1912, just one month after Roald Amundsen. On the return journey from the Pole, at the foot of the Beardmore Glacier, he died on 17th February 1912. All five members of the Polar party perished on that fateful mission.
