A Treasure in the Community

Today (August 5) Western Leisure Centre hosted a free community fun day.

The Treasure Island themed event welcomed visitors from the local area and across Cardiff to enjoy some of the many activities from the special programme of events.

All ages were catered for from step for the over 50’s, junior spin classes, under 10’s football tournaments to Tiger soft play for the tots.

All activities were completely free of charge and the facility was bustling with activity with many staff and customers getting in the pirate spirit in fancy dress costumes!

The idea behind the fun day was to increase awareness  in the community of the centre and of all the fantastic opportunities to get active and healthy through fitness and sport as well as being a place for social interaction.

The leisure centre which is located in Ely, was refurbished and reopened in November 2008.

It is a top class facility offering a wide range of activities for all different levels of fitness. There is a fully equipped gymnasium, three different size swimming pools, several indoor courts for football & racquet sports, an outdoor multi use games area and a cafeteria.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “This is a fantastic facility which has benefited from a wonderful refurbishment. The free community fun day was a phenomenal success and proved a great incentive to get people into the leisure centre and try out the many activities on offer”.

The day also promoted the Max Card. The leisure discount card from Cardiff council was well received as many people were still not aware of the discounts they are entitled to.

Centre Assistant Manager Tracey Highgate said: “We have had a fabulous response from the local community today. We have a great centre here and many people don’t realise what we have available. The event has also been a good opportunity to promote the Max card which allows people to use the centre at discounted rates”.

The Max Card is available to Cardiff residents who are receiving one of a range of benefits or those aged between 16 – 18 years old and in full time education.

The annual card offers discounts off varied leisure activities, up to 50 per cent at Council owned facilities and up to 30 per cent at a number of private partners.

Some of the facilities you can use the card include leisure centres and pools, community halls as well as other partners such as St David’s Hall, Cardiff Castle, Cineworld and Techniquest as well as many more.
