Cardiff Castle looks forward to celebrating the most magical time of year when the ever-popular Victorian Christmas Tours return in December. For many of our visitors a trip to the Castle at this time of year has become something of a family tradition.
This year the Castle servants in full Victorian costume will follow a new tour route through the beautifully decorated and atmospherically lit Castle Apartments. Waiting to greet guests in the Library will be the carol singers with a medley of favourite carols and festive music. Amongst the rooms visitors will see are the children’s Nursery and the Banqueting Hall where the table is set for a lavish Christmas feast.
Santa has a new home too, and this year he will take up residence in the Castle’s Black Tower. He will be ready, settled in his comfortable chair, with time to chat and a present for every child.
Performances of Christmas music and carols from local schools will be in full swing in the Interpretation Centre during the evening. There will be some last minute letter writing to Santa and for parents, the opportunity to buy beautiful toys and presents in the Castle Gift Shop.
For anyone looking for a more in-depth view of a Victorian Christmas, social historian, Dai Wynford Evans, Director of Picton Castle Trust will be here on Friday 10 December to give an entertaining and informal lecture, complete with mince pies and a glass of wine.
The perfect appetiser to the Christmas season, last year’s Victorian Christmas Tours sold out completely, so the advice is to book as early as you can for this year’s treat.
