Abergavenny’s Brewery Yard Regeneration Scheme will formally open tomorrow (Thursday 10th June 2010) at 1pm. The event will be attended by Peter Clarke, Chairman of Monmouthshire County Council and Jocelyn Davies AM, the Welsh Assembly Government’s (WAG) Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration.
The eighteen month scheme was delivered by Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) in partnership with the townspeople of Abergavenny. It was jointly funded by MCC and WAG. There will be a number of activities on the day, including an extended market. This will showcase the space in line with its intended use as an exciting venue for town centre markets and events.
MCC’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Bob Greenland, said:
“I am delighted that we can now formally open the brewery yard. This is a key part of Abergavenny’s regeneration. It will also be a fantastic link between the town centre and the new Morrisons store that will be built on the Cattle Market site.”
The project includes a building, sympathetic in design features to the former Brewery building that occupied part of the site until demolition in 1960. This provides improved public conveniences (male and female and disabled), together with a cafe/kiosk building facility that will become the ‘hub’ of the wider space. Where possible, materials have been locally sourced to maximise sustainability, with red sandstone from local quarries and Monmouthshire oak being used to make the bespoke seating. The site also includes artwork features which add interest, and create a ‘sense of place’. These include ‘barrel’ structures, artwork copings and poetry ‘frieze’ within the main supporting walls.
