Abergele almshouses celebrate 50th anniversary

A low cost housing scheme in Abergele will soon be celebrating it’s 50th anniversary.

The Bamford Hesketh Houses on Groes Llwyd, Abergele were built after Winifred Bamford Hesketh, a former Countess of Dundonald, bequeathed a sum of money for their construction. They were opened on the 4th November 1961.

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar recently visited the houses with Rev Canon Dr Raymond Bayley, of the Almshouse Association, to meet with residents and trustees. Following the visit, he said:

‘It was lovely to receive such a warm welcome from residents in the Bamford Hesketh Houses.

‘The almshouse movement has a long and healthy tradition in Wales and the homes in Abergele provide excellent and affordable accommodation to those who live there.

‘I’m truly grateful to the residents who gave me tours of their homes and to the trustees of the Bamford Hesketh Houses who volunteer their time to manage the small estate.

‘I look forward to visiting again for their 100th anniversary in 50 years time!’
