Aberystwyth RNLI Lifeboat Launches for the 2nd time this week

Aberystwyth RNLI lifeboat diverted from exercise this evening to search for a swimmer in the sea off Aberystwyth main beach.

Aberystwyth RNLI Atlantic 85 lifeboat Spirit Of Friendship and its volunteer crew were diverted from their exercise at 20:43 following an immediate request by H M Coastguard to search for a swimmer off Aberystwyth main beach.

The volunteer lifeboat crew made their way to north beach and immediately carried out a thorough search of the area whilst the local H M Coastguard team searched the shoreline and beach. Several white flares were fired by both the Aberystwyth volunteer Lifeboat crew and Coastguard team to illuminate the search area.

A search and rescue Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley had been requested by H M Coastguard to assist in the search.

The search was soon called off after receiving information from Dyfed Powys Police that the swimmer had been located safe and well. In view of this, the volunteer lifeboat crew, the local HM Coastguard team and the search and rescue Sea King helicopter were stood down and returned to their respective stations. This call was attributed to false alarm with good intent.

The Aberystwyth lifeboat returned to station at 21:45 and made ready for another service.
