Aberystwyth RNLI lifeboat rescue crew on maiden voyage

Aberystwyth RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched to assist a 37 foot sailing yacht that had run aground on its maiden voyage from Aberystwyth.

Volunteer RNLI crewmembers launched the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Spirit of friendship at 6.55pm on Sunday (8 April ) to assist the crew of a sailing yacht that had run aground on its approach to Aberystwyth marina.

The yacht was located in approximately one meter of water in a location known as ‘the trap’; an area of concealed rocks just beyond the harbour entrance where two tributary rivers also meet. A second RNLI crew launched the Arancia inshore rescue craft which was capable of operating in the challenging conditions, assisting to transfer the three crew on board the yacht to the safety of the marina.

Two RNLI crew members boarded and secured the yacht, with the Arancia facilitating the transfer of a tow line to the Atlantic 85 lifeboat, which, helped by a rising tide freed the yacht and successfully returned the vessel to Aberystwyth Marina.
