Aberystwyth University will welcome more than 1200 school pupils from 25 schools in Ceredigion, Powys and Gwynedd this week (18-20th March) for a Science Fair.
The three day Fair, which is organised every year by Aberystwyth University’s Centre for Widening Participation and Social Inclusion (CWPSI), forms part of the 2014 National Science and Engineering Week 14-23 March.
The Science Fair takes place at the Sports Cage at Aberystwyth University’s Penglais Campus and will be open to schools between 9.30am and 3pm for the three days.
Wednesday’s session (19 March) has been extended to 6pm with a specific invitation to members of the public to visit the Festival.
National Science and Engineering Week is Wales’ and the UK’s widest grassroots celebration of all things science and engineering.
Event organiser Roger Morel from the University’s Centre for Widening Participation and Social Inclusion said: “This event aims to shine the spotlight on how The University and many local agencies involvement in science, technology, engineering and maths relate to our everyday lives and helps to inspire the next generation of scientists with fun and participative activities.
“CWPSI is all about education for everyone. We want people, no matter what their background or age, to have an opportunity of higher education and bringing people into a Campus for such an event is often the first step in the education journey.”
“The theme for the Science Fair is ‘Explore the Future’. The Science Fair is also about showing the excellent scientific work that is being done at Aberystwyth University to widen the knowledge of science among school children and show them how important it is in all our lives.”
Those attending the festival will have the opportunity to take part in a wealth of demonstrations and activities along with hands-on encounters with wild animals to understanding volcanoes and climate change and 3-D pictures of the Sun.
There will be interactive stalls from the University’s Mathematics and Physics, Computer Science, Sports and Exercise Science, Psychology, Geography and Earth Sciences, Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences departments as well as Ceredigion County Council and the RSPB.
