Neath Port Talbot Council have said:
“An initial structural assessment has been carried out of the Afan Lido and, in particular, the Pool Hall where the fire occurred.
“The assessment indicates that the Pool Hall has been very badly damaged and the concrete structural frame has been affected. All the pool features, ceiling and fixtures have been destroyed. Previously sealed asbestos has been exposed in the pool area and the fire debris appears contaminated.
“Further structural assessments will take place after Christmas, when the Council will have further technical information available, in order to consider the future options for the Afan Lido structure.
“In the meantime, the site has been secured and fenced, and is patrolled with 24 hour security, to ensure no unauthorized access to the fire damaged building. All aspects of the structure will be continually monitored over the Christmas period and immediately after Christmas further technical assessments will take place. All Health and Safety matters will be carried out in collaboration with the Health and Safety Executive.
“The level of damage indicates that the whole complex will be out of commission and unavailable for access for the foreseeable future and the Council will be making further statements after Christmas about future options.
“We cannot emphasis strongly enough that parents should ensure their children stay away from this dangerous site for their own safety.”
