Afan Lido fire – asbestos danger

Neath Port Talbot logoAfter a fire at the Afan Lido the building being closely monitored says a statement from Neath Port Talbot Council.

The building is secure, fenced and patrolled with the aim of preventing unauthorised access.

The structural assessment is ongoing which is likely to take some time because of the difficulties inside the building with potential risks of roof collapse and fire debris.

Fire and Police investigation into the cause of the fire will only commence at the building after the technical assessment has been finalised.

It is known that asbestos was present within sealed areas of the building and if the fire had breached these areas it is likely that asbestos contamination will be present within parts of the building. Until this has been clarified, no decision on the immediate steps will be made; but the area will continue to be closely monitored over the Christmas period.

We urge all members of the public to stay away from the building as it clearly represent a hazardous environment in its current condition.

In particular, we appeal to parents to ensure that their children stay well clear of the site.

There is also a statement from Celtic Community Leisure, who run the centre, on their operations during the closure.
