The Penhydd mountain bike trail in Afan Forest Park, South Wales, is closing on 12 April for approximately one year whilst Forestry Commission Wales carries out tree thinning work in the area.
This work is necessary to harvest timber for sale and to improve the ecosystem in the forest.
Plans are in the pipeline to redesign and rebuild the trail when the forestry operations are completed.
The rebuilt trail is due to open in mid 2011 and will include some of the original features of the existing route.
Forestry Commission Wales Mountain Bike Ranger Carl Denham said, “Although this trail will be closed for a year or so, it gives us a great opportunity to refresh the route, which was created ten years ago by local mountain bike club Singletrack Mind.
“It is also hoped that the work in the forest will help to open up new areas that can be used for the rebuilt Penhydd Trail and even the planned Blue graded trail.”
The other four mountain bike routes in the Afan Forest Park will be open as normal during the work.
