Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, Aled Roberts, is leading calls in the Assembly for the return to designated standing areas in football stadiums.
In a cross-party debate taking place this afternoon, Assembly Members are calling on the Welsh Government to work closely with sport associations and regulatory authorities to promote safe standing.
Fans have given overwhelming endorsement to Safe Standing area proposals modelled on arrangements in Poland, Germany and Austria.
Aled Roberts AM for North Wales said:
“This is what loyal football supporters deserve. As committed Wrexham fans, my son and I would welcome the added atmosphere that safe standing would bring to the Racecourse Stadium.
“The Lib Dems have been calling for this for years, but the Tories have stopped us doing it in coalition. I urge Conservative Assembly Members to convince their colleagues in Westminster to change their minds on this issue.
“Unfortunately, Wales is unable or opt-out of existing legislation. Therefore, as a sponsor of the motion I am urging the Welsh Government to promote safe standing and lobby for reform at the UK level.
“I also welcome the consensus that has emerged on this issue with members from all parties now recognising that there needs to be change to the unnecessary status quo.”
