An out of this world exhibition of children’s work is to be held at Caernarfon and Bangor libraries.
Gwynedd Library Services held a number of activities for children over the summer holiday as part of its campaign to encourage more young people to use the county’s libraries by creating a fun and vibrant atmosphere.
The activity theme this year was space and dozens of children made colourful alien models as part of the Space Hop competition. The marshans can be seen at Bangor and Caernarfon libraries through the autumn.
Winners of the Space Hop Competition were:
Making an alien – Ben Rhys Buckley, Criccieth Library; Elin Sara Thomas, Llanberis Library and Guto Llŷr Davies, Bangor Library.
Colouring in a rocket – Siriol Hughes, Bangor Library; Erin Carmen Roberts, Blaenau Ffestiniog Library and Cai Thomas, Bethesda Library.
The competition was part of the Reading Challenge – a popular scheme aimed at encouraging children’s interest in reading. Nearly 2,000 children have taken part, and those who have completed the challenge will receive a prize.
A number of activities were also organised in many of the county’s libraries in conjunction with the Reading Challenge, including art, craft and clay workshops.
A 15% increase in lending to children from Gwynedd libraries was also seen during the summer when the activities were being held.
Eleri Fôn, Libraries Promoter for Gwynedd Libraries Service, said:
“Don’t be afraid if you see little green men at Caernarfon and Bangor libraries – we haven’t been invaded by an alien race, you’re just looking at children’s craft work.
“This is an opportunity to display the work produced for the Space Hop competition, it really is worth seeing.
“We are optimistic that the children who took part in the competition and the summer activities will continue to use our libraries and the amazing range of services available to budding readers of all ages.”
The exhibition will be held at Caernarfon Library until 14 October before moving on to Bangor Library until 29 October.
Members of Gwynedd Libraries Service have a choice of thousands of books to borrow, free of charge, as well as the chance to use the computers and free internet access, and to hire DVDs and CDs.
