Swansea’s new city bus station has opened its doors to passengers to herald a new era in public transport in the city.
The multi-million pound passenger facility is welcoming thousands of people back who for more than a year have been without a central bus station.
Cllr John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea, said the new bus station would be something everyone in the city could be proud of.
He said: “Swansea now has a passenger transport terminal that can compete with the best the UK has to offer.
“I’m really thrilled we have been able to pull out all the stops to get this wonderful facility open in time for the Christmas period.
“There is still some work to be completed and this will be done during the next few months but the important thing is that the bus station is open and passengers can catch their bus from there.”
The bus station features 20 bus bays, three coach stands, a modern passenger waiting area and an information desk. When completed it will also feature Shopmobility facilities as well as Changing Places toilet facilities for visitors with mobility problems.
Three retail units are also under development and will be opening in the New Year.
Alan Wallace, Quadrant Shopping Centre Manager, welcomed the opening.
He said: “Traders really don’t mind that the opening is being done in a phased way. The important thing is that people have access to bus services before Christmas and that’s happened so I’m delighted.”
The project has received significant funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and the Wales European Funding Office.
