Think before you drink – that was the message being driven home by all four Welsh Police Forces during the All Wales Summer Anti Drink/Drugs Driving Campaign that was launched on June 1st.
Throughout the month long campaign, a total of 18,345 breath tests were administered.
Chief Inspector John Pavett from Gwent Police’s Roads Policing Unit said:
“In Gwent, 69 out of the 4497 motorists stopped returned a positive breath test or failed/refused to supply a breath test. This equates to 1.5%. Although the percentage is low, one person getting behind the wheel after they have drunk alcohol is one too many and we are still disappointed that people continue to choose to break the law in this way.
Drink Driving is one of the five most common causes of collisions on our roads. Gwent Police remains focused and committed to working with partner agencies and members of the public to do all it can to raise awareness of road safety and target offenders, this continues 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
In the South Wales Police area 3920 tests were conducted with 192 (4.8%) testing positive.
Dyfed Powys Police administered 4213 tests, of which 87 (2.1%) tested positive North Wales carried out 5715 tests, resulting in 96 (1.6 %) positives.
There were also 17 arrests for driving under the influence of drugs.
