Alternative Reading Group Launched

The important new Alternative Reading Group has been formed to bring together people affected by visual impairment, so they can share and celebrate their love of books.

As well as offering a social experience and peer support, the Alternative Reading Group will provide books in formats including audio and large print.

The first meeting of the Alternative Reading Group takes place at Rhydyfelin Library in Poplar Road at 10.30am on August 11.

Everyone is welcome to attend the event, which will include a tour of the library, full support to join the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Library Service, the chance to meet new people and more. Guide dogs are welcome to attend the event and there will also be refreshments.

Following the first meeting, the Alternative Reading Group will then meet on the second Thursday of the month at Rhydyfelin Library from 10.30am to 11.30am.

The Alternative Reading Group has been made possible thanks to a partnership between Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, the Council’s Libraries Service and Cardiff Vale and the Valleys Institute for the Blind.

It is open to anyone in Rhondda Cynon Taf with a visual impairment or those who have a connection with someone with a visual impairment, such as a carer, friend or loved one.

Cllr Robert Bevan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “We are pleased to announce the launch of the Alternative Reading Group, offering a fantastic chance for people to get together and share their love of books and reading.

“It is yet  further proof of the fact there is more to our libraries than books and those who have not visited their local branch recently should really pop in and find out more. The service is free and offers something for all the family.”

For more information on the group, or if you need to discuss transport options, contact Chris Tolliday or Rebecca Jones on 01443 486731.

Membership to all Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Libraries is free of charge, offering access to a wide range of chart-topping books, dvds, cds, research and revision material. Find out more from your local branch or visit the dedicated Libraries webpages
