AM Backs Ban on Electric Shock Collars AM Backs Ban on Electric Shock Collars

Plaid Cymru AM Chris Franks has welcomed the Welsh Assembly Government’s ban on electric shock collars.

A motion was passed in the Senedd earlier this week to outlaw the use of electric shock training devices for animals, making Wales the only country in the UK to do so.

The Kennel Club, who campaigned for four years for the ban, hailed it as an “historic day for animal welfare in Wales.”

Before the vote took place, Chris Franks, who is an AM for South Wales Central, witnessed a demonstration proving dogs can be trained effectively without the use of an electric shock collar.

He later said: “I am delighted that Wales is the first country in the UK to ban these devices. Pain and fear are not humane methods by which to train a dog.

“There is no justification for the use of electric shock training devices and the Welsh Assembly’s decision give a clear message that Wales is leading the way on this important animal welfare issue.”

He added: “I was very pleased that Rural Affairs Minister and Plaid AM Elin Jones has successfully proposed this important protection for dogs.  She has led the way in animal welfare.”
