Plaid Cymru AM Leanne Wood has encouraged schools and libraries to become involved in World Book Day tomorrow (Thursday).
The event is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK and Ireland. This year a new initiative is being run alongside the event called ‘Read to a Million Kids’ which makes available 11 £1 book stories. These stories are read by their authors or actors and will be broadcast online during World Book Day.
South Wales Central AM Leanne Wood said: “The importance of getting children reading at an early age cannot be underestimated for their future development and education.
“I applaud the efforts of the World Book Day, which is not Government-backed but a charity, in promoting literacy among so many children. I hope as many schools and libraries as possible participate in this excellent scheme for years to come by registering on the World Book Day website.
“On a more local level, Rob Jones from Tonypandy has done a great deal to encourage nine to 11-year-old boys to read with his scheme Only Boys Allowed. This scheme has expanded from Williamstown Primary school to help hundreds of pupils thanks to Rob’s tireless efforts.”
Leanne added: “Parents also have a vital role to play in encouraging their children to pick up books and get reading.”
