Regional AM Suzy Davies has called for the First Minister to confirm how the Welsh Government will address noise nuisance complaints from local residents.
The Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West said: “Noise from public constructions and improvement work can have a major impact on the wellbeing of those living nearby, not just in terms of volume but also the duration that such works go on for.”
“The question was prompted by the nightmare suffered by residents in Bridgend as they try and live with their so-called regeneration works, but the same complaints arise with the Swansea Boulevard.
“Swansea Council stated that the road works on Oystermouth Road to build to Boulevard would be complete by the end of 2013. We are almost into April 2014 and the works are still ongoing.”
Mrs Davies added: “There are virtually no successful prosecutions for noise nuisance under existing law. I wanted to know how the Welsh Government can give an effective voice to residents and business owners who complain they have no effective redress when construction and the nuisance that come with it continue longer than planned. The First Minister accepted that current law fails because contractors are tipped off about when their work is to be monitored.”
The AM, who herself lives in Swansea, confirmed: “I have recently written to Swansea Council to find out what their new timescale is for the completion of the Boulevard and I look forward to receiving their response so that we can have some greater clarity.”
