AM Contacts Council Over Speeding Concerns

speedingcefn1Assembly Member Ken Skates is echoing calls for speed reduction measures in Cefn Mawr following complaints from constituents.

The Labour AM for Clwyd South has written to Wrexham Council and asked the authority to investigate possible solutions to the problem of motorists exceeding the 30mph on Cae-Gwilym Lane, the main spine road through the Ty Mawr estate.

Mr Skates said: “One of the things that keeps cropping up when I talk to constituents in Cefn Mawr is speeding on this main road – it’s certainly something that people are concerned about. The limit is 30mph for a reason. It’s a built-up area and there are dozens, if not hundreds of children living on the estate whose lives could be put in danger by a speeding driver.

“The faster someone is driving, the less time they have to stop if something unexpected happens, for example a child running out into the road. The risk of death is approximately four times higher when a pedestrian is hit at 40mph than at 30mph, so the difference of a few miles per hour really can mean the difference between life and death.

“I know the council takes matters such as this extremely seriously, so I have asked them to look into possible solutions and traffic-calming measures so we can try to minimise the risk of someone getting seriously hurt – or worse – because of irresponsible and dangerous drivers.”

Mr Skates and Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones have a joint surgery for constituents at George Edwards Hall in Cefn Mawr on Friday (May 2) from 3.30pm-5.30pm. No appointments are needed as the session will operate on a first come, first served basis.
