Mohammad Asghar, National Assembly Member for South Wales East, continues to lobby the Welsh Government for the city of Newport to be granted enterprise zone status.
Following discussions with the Minister for Business, Enterprise, Technology & Science, Mr Asghar understands that she intends to update AMs on her intentions prior to recess in December.
The South Wales East AM said: “Whilst I welcome initial proposals to base an enterprise zone in Ebbw Vale, I also believe the city of Newport should be granted this important status.
“As Wales’ newest city, Newport deserves every opportunity to grow and flourish and the development of an enterprise zone could be central to that.
“I’m pleased that the Minister continues to meet with a number of key stakeholders on this issue – and I welcome that she is due to meet with Newport Unlimited this week.
“Newport has a very, very strong case for an enterprise zone. The city must not suffer as a consequence of being located between enterprise zones in the big cities of Bristol and Cardiff”.
