Monmouth Assembly Member Nick Ramsay has said he is disappointed by the Welsh Government’s response to a local group’s plea for support to acquire Abergavenny’s former Hill campus.
Mr Ramsay contacted the Government’s Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis AM, in support of a local community group who are hoping to purchase The Hill for community use, and as a study centre dedicated to acclaimed Usk born naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace.
In his response, the Minister states that The Department of Education and Skills approved a request by Coleg Gwent to retain the proceeds from the sale of The Hill Campus in April 2009 to be re-invested into the college estate and that the sale itself was a matter for Coleg Gwent.
Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Ramsay said: “I think the latest approach to develop the Hill is worthy of support and this news will come as a blow to the local group who are making great efforts to acquire this much loved facility. It’s not good enough for the Welsh Government to simply wash their hands of this.
“I will continue to support the local campaign and will keep up the pressure for a positive outcome to this saga.”
