The hidden problem of homelessness in rural areas is being highlighted by Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies.
Mr Davies is championing Shelter Cymru’s Information Matters to Rural Communities Project, a three-year scheme aimed at raising awareness and take up of rights.
Speaking at the Information Matters Open Day in the Wolfscastle Hotel, Mr Davies said: “This project is a valuable resource for people living in rural communities and helps to raise awareness of their rights and improve the quality of their lives.
“Support like this is vital for people in rural areas. Research has shown that homelessness and poverty in rural areas, especially in deep rural areas is more hidden and stigmatised than in urban areas. I sometimes feel that this is not always recognised.”
The project aims to improve the lives of people in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion by raising awareness and improving the take-up of rights in relation to housing, debt and welfare benefits to prevent homelessness and alleviate poverty.
Speaking about the Open Day, Shelter’s Ceri Wisdom said: “It’s always good to get out and talk to people, especially those who have used the Information Matters pack and found it useful. “The event was also a great opportunity to meet individuals and organisations that might otherwise not have been aware of the services Shelter Cymru offers.
“We would like to thank Rev Coe for talking about true life examples of how people have benefited from the information in the pack.
“We really appreciated Paul Davies taking the time to join us and hope we can continue working closely with him in the future.”
