AM Opens Community Garden

On Wednesday 17 November Jeff Cuthbert AM officially opened the newly created Nature and Community Garden at the Aber Valley YMCA. The project started in March of this year when the YMCA asked Groundwork Caerphilly to have a look at an area of hilly land behind the building.

Groundwork Caerphilly drew up a plan and then asked volunteers and students at the local college to help with the work involved in creating the garden. After a tough week involving a lot of digging and dedication the main work was done. The grass is already looking very healthy and in the spring they will add various flowers.

Opening the garden Jeff Cuthbert AM said:

‘I am very pleased that the YMCA, which has for a very long time been a wonderful resource for the community, is now able to offer this garden space. It is a great area for people to relax, read and spend time outside when the weather is nice.’

‘It is also heartening that the students were able to get involved and build skills as well as contribute to the community during this project. Spending time in outside areas is an important element for a healthy lifestyle and I encourage anyone who comes into the YMCA to use the new garden.’
