Local Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert was given a pair of boxing gloves signed by Welsh ring legend Joe Calzaghe during a presentation evening at Blackwood’s Maes Manor Hotel recently.
The evening was organised by local cancer campaigner Bridget McNally MBE to express her thanks to all those who participated in the Valleys ‘Relay for Life’ fundraising event at Ystrad Mynach’s Sue Noake Leisure Centre last July. All money raised over the weekend was donated to Cancer Research UK.
Jeff Cuthbert AM said: “I was deeply honoured to be handed these gloves at the Relay for Life presentation evening recently.
“I have worked with Bridget for a number of years now and the work she has done raising money to fight cancer is absolutely stellar, especially after all that she has gone through with her health.”
Bridget McNally MBE said: “Jeff attended the first Relay for Life and opened the event as a cancer survivor as well as a local AM. He’s done the same thing ever since and also supported us at the Candle of Hope and Closing ceremonies.
“He joined our Committee in 2008 despite his busy life as an Assembly Member. The fact that he is a cancer survivor gives us massive inspiration.
“These boxing gloves were presented to him for everything that he’s done for me and the Relay.”
