Ten years of hard work has paid of for Pembroke Dock Community School with the winning of a prestigious healthy school award.

It is the only primary school in Wales to win the National Quality Award in the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme.

The school has been taking part in the scheme, which promotes and protects the physical, social and mental wellbeing of students, since 1999.

The award was shown to local AM Angela Burns when she gave a recent talk to Year 6 pupils about her life as a shadow minister and a mum.

“I was delighted to learn that it is the first school in Wales to win this award,” she said. “It is well deserved for all their hard work.  I was told of the eight bulging Lever Arch files containing the paperwork for the scheme which gave me some idea of the amount of effort they have put in.

“School initiatives include only having fruit at break times, having a choice of no added salt or sugar cereal at breakfast club and even healthy eating challenge days when the children are given unusual fruit and veg to try.

“As the inspector who made the award summed up – health seems to be central to everything in the school.”

Mrs Burns was given a guided tour of the school after she faced a grilling from the Year 6 children.

“I was asked about everything from what’s happening at Withybush to the future of the planet, how many children did I have and where did I grow up.”
