AM Angela Burns wants to see “warmth checks” introduced for the vulnerable in society, much like the fire safety checks carried out by the Fire Brigade.
The recent spell of extreme cold weather has highlighted the issue of the elderly and poor struggling to keep their homes warm.
One elderly couple in Northampton were found dead during cold snap and it’s feared the temperature may have contributed to their deaths.
“I think there are many small, practical tips which can be passed on to householders face-to-face,” said Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire AM Mrs Burns.
“Fire Safety checks are an excellent system and could be used as a role model for the warmth checks.
“Inspectors could look at insulation levels, problems with drafts, energy saving advice, how to conserve energy and much more.”
Mrs Burns, who is shadow Environment Minister, raised the issue on the floor of the Senedd last week.
“It’s not just the elderly who need help to keep warm at this time of year, there are many other vulnerable people who may be too worried about the bill to turn their heating on and stay warm enough.”
