AM Questions Rhossili Coastal Path Hold-up

Suzy_DaviesSuzy Davies, the Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West, has questioned why repairs to the coastal path at Rhossili have not been completed yet.

The path and steps to Rhossili beach, which make up part of the Wales Coastal Path, were damaged in the recent storms earlier this year. Since then access to the beach via the path has not been possible due to safety concerns.

Mrs Davies said: “I have discussed this matter with Swansea Council, Cadw, and Natural Resources Wales to find out what they need to be able to make the beach accessible.

“As the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Swansea Council had to get confirmation from Natural Resources Wales that they could carry out works to re-route the path and steps. I have spoken with them and they have stated they have no issues with this taking place.

“Part of the proposed new route also passes over a scheduled monument which means Cadw must also give the Council permission. At the start of April Cadw confirmed to me that they were considering the new path as a matter of urgency.

“I therefore would like to know what the hold-up is in getting the path repaired and allowing access to Rhossili beach.”

Mrs Davies, the Shadow Minister for Tourism and Heritage, went on to say: “Last month TripAdvisor named Rhossili Bay the ninth best beach in the world.

“It is imperative that the local businesses are able to make the most of this success and to do this tourists must be able to access the bay they have come specifically to visit.”

The regional AM added: “I hope all parties can work together and pull their fingers out so that the Wales Coastal Path, the jewel in Gower’s crown, can be fully restored.”
