Assembly Member Nick Ramsay has welcomed news that the Welsh Government’s Transport Minister, Edwina Hart AM, is considering a number of options to help resolve flooding issues at Llanellen Bridge.
Mr Ramsay has been pressing the Minister for a solution to the problem and has been contacted by constituents who are anxious to know what is being done.
The village of Llanellen is accessed by two roads, both prone to flooding and problems arise when the A4042 trunk road, administered by the South Wales Trunk Road Agency is closed and traffic is diverted on to the much smaller B4269, which is administered by Monmouthshire County Council’s Highways authority.
Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Ramsay said: “Options being considered include the provision of extra highway drainage, cut off drains on field boundaries and a detention basin.
“It has also been suggested that the construction of a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists and the introduction of traffic signals to facilitate shuttle flow could resolve walking and cycling issues.
“However, further consultation with local landowners and statutory bodies will be necessary to ensure that sufficient land is available and that regulatory requirements are met. The Minister has also recommended that topographical and CCTV surveys be carried out together with detailed studies into the options for controlling surface water runoffs and of the feasibility of constructing a new bridge and of introducing traffic signals.
“I am pleased that some progress appears to have been made towards resolving this long standing issue. Let’s hope it won’t be too long before some of these options are put in place so that flooding at Llanellen becomes a thing of the past.”
