AM Rejects Bryn Composting Claims

Local Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert has rejected claims by Bryn Compost Ltd that the odour problem at their waste recycling plant at Gelliargwellt Uchaf Farm is well in hand.

The company issued a press release earlier this week (22.11.10) claiming that the Welsh Government had recognised there was no risk to public health coming from the site and that local residents’ wish to have operations at the site suspended were disproportionate.

Local Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert however, has said that these claims miss the point:

“I agree with local councillors Hefin and Wynne David, who have pointed out that the issue the residents have raised in their petition to the Welsh Assembly with the site is nothing to do with risks to public health.

“It is to do with the on-going strong odours from the waste processed by the plant that is a constant nuisance to local residents.

“I know that Welsh Government Minister Jane Davidson accepts that there is a problem at this site. The Environment Agency also know that they have to be proactive in dealing with it.

“Bryn Compost Ltd seem to be suggesting that the odour problem is not serious and are playing the whole thing down.

“However, I know full well that this is a very serious matter for residents of Gelligaer, Nelson and Penybryn.

“I repeat my call to the Environment Agency to use their powers to suspend operations at the site until they are satisfied that new processes and / or equipment are in place at Bryn Compost Ltd so as to end this on-going problem.”
